From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Cuba, together comprising 56% of total exports. Denmark, Bulgaria, Spain, the Philippines, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Switzerland, Cambodia, Belgium and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +900.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nicaragua ($X), Germany ($X) and the Philippines ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from Cuba worldwide, with a combined 63% share of total exports. Costa Rica, South Korea, Denmark, Spain, Indonesia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Uruguay, Belgium and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +669.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average unmanufactured tobacco export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 30% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, unmanufactured tobacco export price increased by +4.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of tobacco (unmanufactured) into Cuba expanded remarkably to X tons, picking up by 13% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 103%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplier to Cuba, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Dominican Republic (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Philippines amounted to -10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Dominican Republic (+27.1% per year) and Brazil (+0.3% per year).

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest supplier of unmanufactured tobacco to Cuba, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 19% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Philippines amounted to -9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Dominican Republic (+12.8% per year) and Brazil (-17.2% per year).

In 2021, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -16.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 209% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
