In 2021, exports of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood in the CIS skyrocketed to X units, surging by 218% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
Russia dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. Moldova (X units) took an 8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (4.6%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood box exports from Russia stood at +37.1%. At the same time, Moldova (+37.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Russia (+36 p.p.) and Moldova (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Belarus (-39.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) emerged as the largest wood box supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
In Russia, wood box exports increased at an average annual rate of +34.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Moldova (+43.0% per year) and Belarus (+8.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -20.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Wood Box Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2021, overseas purchases of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 110%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood box imports expanded to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 212% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of cases, boxes, crates, drums and similar packings of wood, namely Moldova, Kazakhstan and Belarus, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X units) and Russia (X units), together achieving a 16% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +29.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood box importing markets in the CIS were Moldova ($X), Belarus ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together comprising 82% of total imports.
Moldova, with a CAGR of +37.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -5.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
