Whole Fresh Milk Market Size in China
After two years of growth, the Chinese whole fresh milk market decreased by -0.7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Whole Fresh Milk Production in China
In value terms, whole fresh milk production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Whole Fresh Milk Exports
Exports from China
In 2022, the amount of whole fresh milk exported from China amounted to X tons, growing by 4.3% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, whole fresh milk exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cambodia (X tons) was the main destination for whole fresh milk exports from China, with a 1.8% share of total exports. Moreover, whole fresh milk exports to Cambodia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Myanmar (X tons), fivefold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 0.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cambodia stood at +79.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Myanmar (+35.0% per year) and Singapore (-14.4% per year).
In value terms, Cambodia ($X) remains the key foreign market for whole fresh milk exports from China, comprising 2.2% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 0.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 0.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Cambodia totaled +63.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-5.8% per year) and Myanmar (+39.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average whole fresh milk export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 52% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whole Fresh Milk Imports
Imports into China
In 2022, purchases abroad of whole fresh milk decreased by -26.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, whole fresh milk imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 119%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main suppliers of whole fresh milk imports to China, together accounting for 78% of total imports. Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +81.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X), Germany ($X) and Australia ($X) were the largest whole fresh milk suppliers to China, together accounting for 81% of total imports. Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.
Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +81.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average whole fresh milk import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were New Zealand ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) and Australia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
