Tea Market Size in Azerbaijan

The revenue of the tea market in Azerbaijan amounted to $X in 2018, reducing by -X% against the previous year. Overall, tea consumption, however, continues to indicate outstanding growth. In value terms, tea production totaled $X in 2018 estimated in export prices. Overall, tea production, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when production volume increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, tea production reached its peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2018, tea production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2018, the average tea yield in Azerbaijan amounted to X tonne per ha, jumping by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the tea yield continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Tea yield peaked at X tonne per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2018, yield failed to regain its momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2018, approx. X ha of tea were harvested in Azerbaijan; coming down by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the tea harvested area continues to indicate a drastic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Tea exports from Azerbaijan totaled X tonnes in 2018, dropping by -X% against the previous year. In general, tea exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. In that year, tea exports reached their peak of X tonnes. From 2011 to 2018, the growth of tea exports failed to regain its momentum.

In value terms, tea exports stood at $X in 2018. Overall, tea exports continue to indicate a drastic decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2018, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tonnes), Georgia (X tonnes) and Ukraine (X tonnes) were the main destinations of tea exports from Azerbaijan, with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Uzbekistan, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Georgia ($X) and Ukraine ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tea exported from Azerbaijan worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which together accounted for a further X the main countries of destination, Kazakhstan recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to exports, over the last eleven-year period, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tea export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2018: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, tea export price increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2018 and is expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Uzbekistan ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2017, and then declined slightly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2018 and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Sri Lanka (X tonnes) constituted the largest tea supplier to Azerbaijan, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tea imports from Sri Lanka exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by India (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume from Sri Lanka stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+X% per year) and India (+X% per year).
