In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Production By Country in Asia

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of diesel-electric locomotive production, comprising approx. X% of total volume. It was followed by India (X tons), with a X% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (+X% per year) and Turkey (+X% per year).

Exports in Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of diesel-electric locomotives increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive exports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), generating a X% share of total exports. South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to diesel-electric locomotive exports from China stood at -X%. At the same time, Malaysia (+X%), South Korea (+X%), Kazakhstan (+X%) and India (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +X% from 2012-2021. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India, South Korea, Malaysia and Kazakhstan increased by +X, +X, +X and +X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Diesel-Electric Locomotive Imports

Imports in Asia

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of diesel-electric locomotives decreased by -X% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, diesel-electric locomotive imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Turkmenistan was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons), together creating a X% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), India (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Turkmenistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the diesel-electric locomotives imports, with a CAGR of +X% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+X%), Singapore (+X%), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+X%), the United Arab Emirates (+X%), Sri Lanka (+X%), India (+X%) and Uzbekistan (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mongolia (-X%) and Kazakhstan (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkmenistan (+X p.p.), Sri Lanka (+X p.p.), Indonesia (+X p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+X p.p.), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (+X p.p.) and Singapore (+X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Mongolia saw its share reduced by -X% and -X% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), India ($X) and Mongolia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined X% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Democratic People's Republic of Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
