Telephone Market Size in ASEAN

For the third year in a row, the ASEAN telephone market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, telephone production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X%. For the third consecutive year, ASEAN recorded decline in shipments abroad of telephones and videophones, which decreased by X% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, telephone exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the largest exporter of telephones and videophones in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X units), Singapore (X units) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X units). All these countries together took near X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Indonesia (X units) and Cambodia (X units) - each recorded a X% share of total exports.

Exports from Malaysia decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (X%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (X%), Thailand (X%), Singapore (X%) and Vietnam (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (X p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X p.p.), Thailand (X p.p.) and Cambodia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore and Vietnam saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest telephone supplying countries in ASEAN were Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Singapore, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Indonesia and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per unit), while Cambodia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Telephone imports rose remarkably to X units in 2022, with an increase of X% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, telephone imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The Philippines (X units) and Thailand (X units) represented roughly X% of total imports in 2022. Singapore (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X units) and Myanmar (X units). All these countries together took near X% share of total imports. Vietnam (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
