Refined Lead Market Size in ASEAN

The ASEAN refined lead market declined to $X in 2022, dropping by -8.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, refined lead production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 100%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ASEAN

In 2022, overseas shipments of refined lead (unwrought) increased by 1.1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 268% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, refined lead exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 195% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia represented the largest exporter of refined lead (unwrought) in ASEAN, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 55% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together constituting a 34% share of total exports. The Philippines (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of refined lead (unwrought). At the same time, Myanmar (+96.8%), the Philippines (+36.1%) and Indonesia (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +96.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-12.3%) and Singapore (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar, Malaysia and the Philippines increased by +21, +19 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest refined lead supplier in ASEAN, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Myanmar ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 14% share.

In Malaysia, refined lead exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Myanmar (+95.7% per year) and Singapore (-16.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Indonesia ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Refined Lead Imports

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, supplies from abroad of refined lead (unwrought) decreased by -0.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, refined lead imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the main importer of refined lead (unwrought) in ASEAN, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 44% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 53% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to refined lead imports into Vietnam stood at +5.8%. At the same time, the Philippines (+22.6%) and Singapore (+19.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-3.2%), Thailand (-4.4%) and Malaysia (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam, the Philippines and Singapore increased by +17, +8.9 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 81% of total imports. The Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +22.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
