The ASEAN crabs, not frozen market was estimated at $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. In 2022, shipments abroad of crabs, not frozen increased by 8.3% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 13%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the main exporter of crabs, not frozen, comprising 86% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), mixing up an 11% share of total exports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crabs, not frozen exports, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012 to 2022. Singapore (-3.6%) and Vietnam (-21.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+85 p.p.), Vietnam (+4.5 p.p.) and Singapore (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest crabs, not frozen supplier in ASEAN, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In Malaysia, crabs, not frozen exports expanded at an average annual rate of +40.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (-13.8% per year) and Singapore (-6.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ASEAN

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of crabs, not frozen, when their volume decreased by -0.6% to X tons. In general, imports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crabs, not frozen imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 98% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crabs, not frozen in ASEAN, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

In Singapore, crabs, not frozen imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+1.4% per year) and Vietnam (+52.9% per year).

In 2022, the import price in ASEAN amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
