After three years of decline, the African rice bran market increased by X% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a sharp descent. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rice bran exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Tanzania was the main exporter of rice bran in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Uganda (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Guinea (X tons), Liberia (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each amounted to a X% share of total exports.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rice bran exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Guinea (X%), Zambia (X%), Liberia (X%) and Uganda (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Congo (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (X p.p.), Zambia (X p.p.), Guinea (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) and Liberia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Uganda and Congo saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest rice bran supplying countries in Africa were Tanzania ($X), Uganda ($X) and Congo ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Zambia, Guinea, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Congo (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of rice bran imported in Africa surged to X tons, jumping by X% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, rice bran imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kenya represented the key importer of rice bran in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons), together making up a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Rwanda (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - each recorded a X% share of total imports.

Imports into Kenya increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (X%), Rwanda (X%), Angola (X%), South Africa (X%), Niger (X%) and Mauritania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal, South Africa, Rwanda and Angola increased by X, X, X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
