In value terms, malt exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at X% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kenya (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (X%), Cameroon (X%) and Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritius (X%), Zimbabwe (X%) and Kenya (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (X p.p.) and Namibia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mauritius, Kenya and Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in Africa

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of malt decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, malt imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of malt, namely Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola and Cameroon, represented more than third of total import. It was followed by Tanzania (X tons), committing a X% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
