The African fresh pork carcase market reduced to $X in 2022, dropping by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Egypt (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), with a combined 37% share of total production. Uganda, Algeria, Kenya, Mozambique, Tunisia, Madagascar, Libya, Burkina Faso, Zambia and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 49%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat were exported in Africa; declining by -9.8% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 75%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2022.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat exports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest fresh pork carcase supplier in Africa.

In South Africa, fresh pork carcase exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2022, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat decreased by -15.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mozambique was the major importer of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 54% of total imports in 2022. Namibia (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (4.6%). Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Mozambique increased at an average annual rate of +31.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Congo (+40.8%), Ghana (+33.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.3%), Namibia (+6.9%) and Lesotho (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (+46 p.p.), Ghana (+3.6 p.p.) and Congo (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-3.7 p.p.) and Angola (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat in Africa, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mozambique amounted to +28.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+3.3% per year) and Angola (-7.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -11.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
