Dried Grapes Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African dried grapes market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, showed a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried grapes production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of dried grapes exported in Africa declined to X tons, with a decrease of -12.8% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried grapes exports dropped to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -27.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of dried grapes in Africa, committing 99% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried grapes exports, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012 to 2022. South Africa (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest dried grapes supplier in Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +5.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of dried grapes increased by 2% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +50.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dried grapes imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 30%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Morocco represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 42% of total imports. Algeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Egypt (5.9%) and South Africa (5.4%). The following importers - Libya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), South Sudan (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried grapes imports into Morocco stood at +26.3%. At the same time, South Sudan (+78.7%), South Africa (+21.9%), Senegal (+21.8%), Ethiopia (+19.7%), Libya (+4.3%) and Tunisia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Sudan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +78.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Algeria (-2.3%) and Egypt (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+37 p.p.), South Africa (+4.4 p.p.), South Sudan (+3.3 p.p.), Senegal (+2.2 p.p.) and Ethiopia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria and Egypt saw its share reduced by -14.5% and -19.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dried grapes in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Algeria ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 7.6% share.

In Morocco, dried grapes imports increased at an average annual rate of +23.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Algeria (-6.0% per year) and Egypt (-7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 9.5% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Sudan (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
