For the fifth year in a row, the African animal fats market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, consumption recorded strong growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2023, exports of animal fats and oils in Africa expanded notably to X tons, picking up by X% compared with the year before. Overall, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats exports reached $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Tunisia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of animal fats and oils, mixing up X% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by South Africa (X%) and Cameroon (X%). The following exporters - Zambia (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to animal fats exports from Tunisia stood at X%. At the same time, Zambia (X%), Tanzania (X%), Kenya (X%) and South Africa (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Egypt (X%) and Cameroon (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (X p.p.), Tanzania (X p.p.), Cameroon (X p.p.) and Zambia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of South Africa (X p.p.) and Egypt (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Zambia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, purchases abroad of animal fats and oils increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, animal fats imports surged to $X in 2023. In general, imports saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importer of animal fats and oils in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Ethiopia (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Somalia (X tons), together generating a X% share of total imports. Uganda (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the animal fats and oils imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Angola (X%), Uganda (X%), Zimbabwe (X%), Sudan (X%), Somalia (X%) and Ethiopia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (X p.p.), Angola (X p.p.), Uganda (X p.p.), Zimbabwe (X p.p.) and Sudan (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Somalia and Ethiopia saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

In value terms, the largest animal fats importing markets in Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Sudan, Somalia, Uganda and Zimbabwe lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2014 to 2023, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
