Whey Price in Thailand (CIF) - 2023
The average whey import price stood at $1,125 per ton in September 2023, approximately mirroring the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 7.5% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1,895 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($2,127 per ton), while the price for Germany ($781 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Whey Price in Thailand (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average whey export price amounted to $1,133 per ton, reducing by -23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2023 when the average export price increased by 28% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,471 per ton, and then fell remarkably in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($1,800 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($1,053 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lao People's Democratic Republic (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whey Imports in Thailand
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of whey decreased by -7.5% to 66K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 9.9% against the previous year.
In value terms, whey imports surged to $112M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Whey Exports in Thailand
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of whey, when their volume decreased by -17.3% to 4.5K tons. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 5.4K tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, whey exports reduced notably to $5.4M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $6.4M, and then declined markedly in the following year.
