Whey Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2023

The average whey export price stood at $1,772 per ton in September 2023, jumping by 43% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The export price peaked at $4,388 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($12,239 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($690 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Whey Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022

The average whey import price stood at $3,801 per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, whey import price increased by +101.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 23%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($7,451 per ton), while the price for the UK ($2,175 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+18.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Whey Exports in New Zealand

Whey exports from New Zealand skyrocketed to 25K tons in 2022, increasing by 54% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, whey exports surged to $75M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
