Whey Price in Ireland (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average whey export price amounted to $1,549 per ton, waning by -12.4% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 9.8% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $2,386 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Chile ($3,008 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($1,066 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whey Price in Ireland (CIF) - 2023
The average whey import price stood at $3,157 per ton in August 2023, picking up by 56% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,660 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($6,800 per ton), while the price for France ($1,790 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Whey Exports in Ireland
In 2022, whey exports from Ireland amounted to 139K tons, increasing by 1.8% against the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, whey exports amounted to $281M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Whey Imports in Ireland
For the third year in a row, Ireland recorded decline in supplies from abroad of whey, which decreased by 0% to 26K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The smallest decline of -11.3% was in 2020.
In value terms, whey imports stood at $78M in 2022. Overall, imports saw a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 8.4% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $88M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
