Types of Crude Oil Refineries

Crude oil refineries are industrial facilities where crude oil is processed and refined to produce various petroleum products. They are primarily used for producing gasoline and diesel fuel.

Complex Refineries

Complex refineries are more advanced and versatile than conventional refineries. They have additional secondary processing units such as fluid catalytic cracking (FCC), hydrocracking, and coking units. These units allow complex refineries to convert heavier crude oils and residual products into more valuable petroleum products. Complex refineries have higher conversion capabilities and can produce a wider range of products including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, asphalt, lubricants, and petrochemical feedstocks.

Topping Refineries

Topping refineries are specialized refineries that primarily focus on processing heavy crude oils or residual products. These refineries typically have only a few processing units and focus on crude oil distillation. They are used to produce heavy fuel oils, petroleum coke, asphalt, and other residual products. Topping refineries are often located near crude oil sources or heavy industrial areas where there is a high demand for heavy fuel oils.

Conversion Refineries

Conversion refineries are specialized refineries that focus on converting heavy and sour crude oils into lighter and less polluting products. They have advanced units such as hydrocracking and hydrotreating to remove impurities and convert heavy hydrocarbons into valuable products. Conversion refineries play a crucial role in meeting environmental regulations and producing cleaner fuels with reduced emissions.
