Consumption

World Consumption of Continuous And Discontinuous Totalisers

In 2022, consumption of continuous and discontinuous totalisers decreased by -5.9% to 656K units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, saw significant growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak volume of 1.1M units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the global consumption remained at a lower figure.

The global totaliser market revenue skyrocketed to $3.4B in 2022, with an increase of 146% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Consumption By Country

Thailand (201K units) constituted the country with the largest volume of totaliser consumption, accounting for 31% of total volume. Moreover, totaliser consumption in Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, Denmark (95K units), twofold. Malaysia (93K units) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Thailand amounted to +71.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Denmark (+21.8% per year) and Malaysia (+31.1% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($2.5B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($162M). It was followed by the United States.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +69.2%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Denmark (+21.7% per year) and the United States (+22.8% per year).

In 2022, the highest levels of totaliser per capita consumption was registered in Denmark (16 units per 1000 persons), followed by Singapore (5.6 units per 1000 persons), Thailand (2.9 units per 1000 persons) and Malaysia (2.8 units per 1000 persons), while the world average per capita consumption of totaliser was estimated at 0.1 units per 1000 persons.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of the totaliser per capita consumption in Denmark amounted to +21.2%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of per capita consumption growth: Singapore (+81.5% per year) and Thailand (+71.2% per year).

Production

World Production of Continuous And Discontinuous Totalisers

In 2022, production of continuous and discontinuous totalisers increased by 14% to 128K units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +106.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the peak volume in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, totaliser production reduced to $386M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $612M in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Hong Kong SAR (34K units), China (27K units) and the UK (13K units), together comprising 58% of global production. The Netherlands, Japan, Italy, Germany, Vietnam, the Czech Republic, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Bangladesh and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +58.5%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Continuous And Discontinuous Totalisers

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of continuous and discontinuous totalisers, when their volume decreased by -9.8% to 632K units. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 512% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.1M units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser imports expanded sharply to $200M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $233M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports By Country

Thailand represented the largest importing country with an import of about 202K units, which resulted at 32% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (98K units), Malaysia (94K units), the United States (66K units) and Singapore (33K units), together committing a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - India (24K units), Canada (20K units), the Philippines (13K units), Spain (11K units) and Poland (10K units) - together made up 13% of total imports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the continuous and discontinuous totalisers imports, with a CAGR of +88.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+49.7%), India (+48.7%), Poland (+34.1%), Malaysia (+31.0%), the United States (+28.6%), Spain (+24.8%), Denmark (+21.1%) and Canada (+11.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+32 p.p.), Malaysia (+10 p.p.), the United States (+6.6 p.p.), Denmark (+5.1 p.p.), India (+3.5 p.p.) and the Philippines (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Canada (-1.8 p.p.) and Singapore (-33.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($28M) constitutes the largest market for imported continuous and discontinuous totalisers worldwide, comprising 14% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($7.1M), with a 3.5% share of global imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 3.5% share.

In the United States, totaliser imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+2.7% per year) and Spain (+6.6% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average totaliser import price amounted to $317 per unit, rising by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 215%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,411 per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($653 per unit), while Denmark ($24 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+1.4%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Continuous And Discontinuous Totalisers

In 2022, global totaliser exports reduced to 103K units, with a decrease of -10.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 169%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 115K units, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, totaliser exports expanded rapidly to $171M in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (34K units), distantly followed by China (20K units) and the Netherlands (9.6K units) were the major exporters of continuous and discontinuous totalisers, together constituting 61% of total exports. The United States (3.9K units), Denmark (3.6K units), the UK (3.6K units), Italy (3.5K units), India (3.1K units), the Czech Republic (2.8K units), Poland (2.4K units), Belgium (2.4K units), Spain (2.3K units) and Germany (1.8K units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +67.4%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($25M), China ($22M) and the United States ($16M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 37% of global exports. The Netherlands, the UK, Denmark, Italy, the Czech Republic, Spain, India, Poland, Hong Kong SAR and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the UK, with a CAGR of +28.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average totaliser export price amounted to $1,650 per unit, growing by 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $3,432 per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($13,491 per unit), while Hong Kong SAR ($8.9 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+52.2%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
