Tomato Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022

The average tomato import price stood at $1,416 per ton in June 2022, flattening at the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 9.1% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $1,612 per ton in November 2021; however, from December 2021 to June 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($2,329 per ton), while the price for Mexico amounted to $1,248 per ton.

From June 2021 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+0.1%).

Tomato Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In September 2023, the average tomato export price amounted to $1,697 per ton, surging by 17% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 27% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,099 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,704 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico totaled $915 per ton.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+0.6%).

Tomato Imports in the United States

In 2022, the amount of tomatoes imported into the United States shrank notably to 1M tons, dropping by -46% against 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.9M tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, tomato imports declined notably to $1.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.8B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Tomato Exports in the United States

In 2022, approx. 192K tons of tomatoes were exported from the United States; with a decrease of -3.7% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 8.9%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 199K tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, tomato exports reduced slightly to $313M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.2% against the previous year.
