Swine; Live Price in Spain (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average swine; live import price amounted to $284 per unit, which is down by -8.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 24% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $311 per unit in July 2023, and then reduced in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($415 per unit), while the price for Luxembourg ($156 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average swine; live export price stood at $150 per unit in August 2023, with a decrease of -3.5% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 16% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $155 per unit in July 2023, and then declined in the following month.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($151 per unit), while the average price for exports to Germany stood at $136 per unit.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+6.6%).

Swine; Live Imports in Spain

For the fourth year in a row, Spain recorded growth in supplies from abroad of swine; live, which increased by 3.4% to 3.2M units in 2022. In general, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +22.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +83.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, swine; live imports rose rapidly to $282M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of swine; live increased by 68% to 2M units in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at 2M units in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, swine; live exports expanded notably to $165M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The exports peaked at $181M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
