Sulphites; Thiosulphates Price in Malaysia (CIF) - 2021
In December 2021, the average sulphites; thiosulphates import price amounted to $561 per ton, declining by -12.1% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a slight expansion from December 2020 to December 2021: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2021 figures, sulphites; thiosulphates import price increased by +15.4% against June 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2021 an increase of 32% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $638 per ton in November 2021, and then shrank in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,007 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($121 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2020 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sulphites; thiosulphates export price stood at $658 per ton in 2022, waning by -8.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,119 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($784 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($346 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brunei Darussalam (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sulphites; Thiosulphates Imports in Malaysia
In 2022, approx. 18K tons of sulphites; thiosulphateses were imported into Malaysia; surging by 1.7% against 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 3.2%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 18K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sulphites; thiosulphates imports declined to $7.4M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7.8M, and then reduced in the following year.
