Sulphites Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average sulphites import price amounted to $428 per ton, which is down by -10.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $711 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($500 per ton), while the price for China stood at $384 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Sulphites Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022
The average sulphites export price stood at $1,455 per ton in 2022, surging by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 248%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,756 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($2,102 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($1,140 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Caledonia (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sulphites Imports in Australia
In 2022, overseas purchases of sulphites increased by 6.4% to 36K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
In value terms, sulphites imports surged to $23M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
