Sugar Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average sugar import price amounted to $716 per ton, reducing by -4.6% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 10% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $765 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($873 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($486 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sugar Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022

The average sugar export price stood at $693 per ton in 2022, falling by -6.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23%. The export price peaked at $784 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Mexico ($872 per ton) and Indonesia ($852 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($598 per ton) and Canada ($630 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Sugar Imports in the United States

In 2022, approx. 2.4M tons of sugar were imported into the United States; surging by 10% compared with 2021. Overall, imports showed a slight expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugar imports soared to $1.6B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Sugar Exports in the United States

In 2022, shipments abroad of sugar was finally on the rise to reach 8.8K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sugar exports surged to $6.1M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
