Sugar Price in the Dominican Republic (FOB) - 2023
The average sugar export price stood at $654 per ton in March 2023, approximately mirroring the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 46% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $845 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to March 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +0.7% per month.
Sugar Price in the Dominican Republic (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average sugar import price amounted to $680 per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $1,071 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Guatemala.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Brazil amounted to +5.5% per year.
Sugar Exports in the Dominican Republic
In 2022, approx. 221K tons of sugar were exported from the Dominican Republic; growing by 7.5% on 2021 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sugar exports rose markedly to $131M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of sugar, when their volume decreased by -96.8% to 392 tons. Over the period under review, imports saw a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 12K tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, sugar imports dropped dramatically to $266K in 2022. In general, imports saw a significant contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 117% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $7.4M, and then plummeted in the following year.
