Sugar Price in Hong Kong SAR (CIF) - 2023
The average sugar import price stood at $1,171 per ton in June 2023, increasing by 17% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a moderate increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, sugar import price increased by +16.8% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 28% month-to-month. The import price peaked in June 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($2,049 per ton), while the price for Mauritius ($794 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sugar Price in Hong Kong SAR (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average sugar export price amounted to $1,663 per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The export price peaked at $1,684 per ton in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($3,757 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($1,074 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+17.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sugar Imports in Hong Kong SAR
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of sugar, when their volume increased by 54% to 18K tons. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sugar imports surged to $15M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Sugar Exports in Hong Kong SAR
For the third consecutive year, Hong Kong SAR recorded decline in shipments abroad of sugar, which decreased by -39% to 641 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a dramatic curtailment. The smallest decline of -13.4% was in 2021.
In value terms, sugar exports declined markedly to $1.1M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a sharp shrinkage. The smallest decline of -23.4% was in 2020.
