Steel Railway Material Price in Germany (CIF) - 2023

The average steel railway material import price stood at $1,394 per ton in June 2023, picking up by 5.8% against the previous month. Over the period from June 2022 to June 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 32% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,497 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Luxembourg ($1,551 per ton) and Poland ($1,473 per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($1,046 per ton) and Austria ($1,276 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Steel Railway Material Price in Germany (FOB) - 2022

The average steel railway material export price stood at $2,557 per ton in 2022, declining by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,709 per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($4,337 per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($1,012 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Steel Railway Material Imports in Germany

For the fourth year in a row, Germany recorded growth in supplies from abroad of railway material of steel, which increased by 14% to 415K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, steel railway material imports soared to $434M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, steel railway material exports rose rapidly to $220M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
