In July 2023, the average stationery product import price amounted to $4,180 per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($5,616 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($1,501 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In July 2023, the average stationery product export price amounted to $3,147 per ton, jumping by 24% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 74% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $5,305 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($12,334 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($1,728 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Stationery Product Imports in Japan

In 2022, supplies from abroad of stationery products was finally on the rise to reach 52K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, stationery product imports stood at $198M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a mild shrinkage.

Stationery Product Exports in Japan

In 2022, overseas shipments of stationery products decreased by -7.9% to 9.1K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 79%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 9.9K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, stationery product exports dropped to $51M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $60M, and then dropped in the following year.
