In 2022, the average spices; nutmeg import price amounted to $10,647 per ton, declining by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 4.3%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $10,844 per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($15,704 per ton), while the price for India stood at $203 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+6.2%).

In 2022, purchases abroad of spices; nutmeg decreased by -6.6% to 348 tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 373 tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, spices; nutmeg imports fell to $3.7M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $4M, and then dropped in the following year.
