Salt Price in Sudan (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average salt import price amounted to $375 per ton, reducing by -16.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, salt import price increased by +75.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 66%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $450 per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($733 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($128 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Salt Price in Sudan (FOB) - 2022

The average salt export price stood at $207 per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 600% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,108 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($225 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($65 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Salt Imports in Sudan

Salt imports into Sudan declined to 943 tons in 2022, waning by -11.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports faced a dramatic setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year.

In value terms, salt imports declined rapidly to $353K in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 110%.

Salt Exports in Sudan

In 2022, shipments abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -33.9% to 10 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 134% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 19 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, salt exports dropped sharply to $2.2K in 2022. In general, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 61%.
