The average salt import price stood at $675 per ton in September 2023, rising by 17% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 150% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,054 per ton. From May 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($1,990 per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($309 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Salt Exports in Australia

In 2022, salt exports from Australia skyrocketed to 114K tons, picking up by 63% compared with the year before. In general, exports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 465% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, salt exports skyrocketed to $21M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant expansion.
