In 2022, the average sack and bag import price amounted to $1,844 per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,065 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($2,849 per ton), while the price for India ($1,590 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+11.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Sack and Bag Price in Ghana (FOB) - 2022

The average sack and bag export price stood at $4,359 per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $5,718 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($10,096 per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($1,329 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cameroon (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sack and Bag Imports in Ghana

For the fourth year in a row, Ghana recorded growth in overseas purchases of sacks and bags, which increased by 34% to 41K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sack and bag imports skyrocketed to $76M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, approx. 63 tons of sacks and bags were exported from Ghana; declining by -49.2% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a dramatic descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 2.7%.

In value terms, sack and bag exports contracted sharply to $275K in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a precipitous descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year.
