Raw Silk Price in the United States (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average raw silk import price amounted to $55,007 per ton, which is down by -26.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $101,504 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($127,686 per ton), while the price for China ($39,360 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Raw Silk Price in the United States (FOB) - 2022

The average raw silk export price stood at $6,980 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -18.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 982%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $14,406 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($13,760 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($2,187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+46.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Raw Silk Imports in the United States

Raw silk imports into the United States soared to 2.5 tons in 2022, growing by 17% on 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +100.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, raw silk imports fell to $140K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 60%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $163K, and then fell in the following year.

From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, raw silk exports skyrocketed to $189K in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
