Raw Silk Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023

The average raw silk import price stood at $73,707 per ton in July 2023, falling by -12.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 8.9% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $84,244 per ton, and then contracted in the following month.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Brazil ($99,088 per ton) and Romania ($93,076 per ton), while the price for China ($67,784 per ton) and Vietnam ($70,615 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Raw Silk Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average raw silk export price amounted to $73,825 per ton, reducing by -3.7% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 27% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $79,884 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($106K per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($55,048 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Raw Silk Imports in Italy

Raw silk imports into Italy declined modestly to 527 tons in 2022, shrinking by -1.7% against the year before. In general, imports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%.

In value terms, raw silk imports expanded notably to $38M in 2022. Overall, imports saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%.

Raw Silk Exports in Italy

In 2022, the amount of raw silk exported from Italy contracted dramatically to 352 tons, falling by -18.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 429 tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, raw silk exports contracted to $24M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $27M, and then declined in the following year.
