Raw Silk Price in Germany (CIF) - 2023

The average raw silk import price stood at $68,553 per ton in March 2023, growing by 53% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated strong growth from July 2022 to March 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.9% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on March 2023 figures, raw silk import price increased by +53.0% against February 2023 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($97,434 per ton), while the price for China ($55,595 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Raw Silk Price in Germany (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average raw silk export price amounted to $43,330 per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 36%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $82,118 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Sweden ($56,607 per ton) and the Czech Republic ($54,337 per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($39,809 per ton) and Bulgaria ($41,166 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Raw Silk Imports in Germany

For the fourth consecutive year, Germany recorded growth in overseas purchases of raw silk, which increased by 20% to 163 tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +26.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +103.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, raw silk imports surged to $7.5M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +27.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +106.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of raw silk decreased by -19.1% to 88 tons in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year.

In value terms, raw silk exports contracted notably to $3.8M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -22.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 53%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $4.9M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
