In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $678M. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were Turkey (177K tons), China (111K tons) and Uzbekistan (90K tons), with a combined 50% share of global consumption. Iran, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Argentina, the Netherlands and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +7.8%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($138M), China ($99M) and Uzbekistan ($80M) were the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2022, with a combined 48% share of the global market. Iran, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Argentina, the Netherlands and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +7.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of market size in terms of the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of quince per capita consumption in 2022 were Azerbaijan (4 kg per person), Uzbekistan (2.6 kg per person) and Turkey (2.1 kg per person).

World Production of Quinces

In 2022, production of quinces increased by 0.1% to 758K tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum volume in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a mild increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.

In value terms, quince production shrank slightly to $618M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 21%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $752M. From 2019 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Turkey (198K tons), China (111K tons) and Uzbekistan (91K tons), together accounting for 53% of global production. Iran, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Argentina and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Yield

The global average quince yield totaled 9.2 tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average quince yield hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Harvested Area

In 2022, approx. 82K ha of quinces were harvested worldwide; flattening at the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 3.5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to quince production reached the maximum at 83K ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Imports

World Imports of Quinces

In 2022, purchases abroad of quinces decreased by -5% to 34K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after seven years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 36K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quince imports shrank to $30M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $34M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports By Country

In 2022, Russia (7.6K tons), distantly followed by Austria (3.9K tons), Romania (2.8K tons), Germany (2.6K tons) and the United States (1.9K tons) were the largest importers of quinces, together comprising 55% of total imports. The Netherlands (1,272 tons), Georgia (1,153 tons), Spain (1,106 tons), Portugal (974 tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (924 tons), Israel (777 tons), France (717 tons) and Albania (701 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +69.0%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest quince importing markets worldwide were Russia ($5.7M), Austria ($4.9M) and Germany ($2.7M), together accounting for 45% of global imports. Romania, the United States, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Israel, Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and Georgia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Spain, with a CAGR of +69.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average quince import price amounted to $880 per ton, falling by -7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 13%. Global import price peaked at $1,046 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($1,287 per ton), while Georgia ($168 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+6.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Quinces

In 2022, overseas shipments of quinces decreased by -5.5% to 41K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at 43K tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, quince exports shrank to $35M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $40M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports By Country

Turkey was the main exporter of quinces in the world, with the volume of exports reaching 20K tons, which was approx. 49% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (4.5K tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Greece (3.2K tons), Austria (3.2K tons) and Spain (2.3K tons). All these countries together held near 32% share of total exports. Azerbaijan (1.6K tons) and Serbia (1K tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to quince exports from Turkey stood at +6.9%. At the same time, Austria (+99.7%), Azerbaijan (+27.0%), Serbia (+21.9%) and Greece (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +99.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.2%) and Spain (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+9.6 p.p.), Austria (+7.8 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+3.4 p.p.), Serbia (+1.8 p.p.) and Greece (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Spain (-6.7 p.p.) and the Netherlands (-10.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($14M) remains the largest quince supplier worldwide, comprising 41% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($5.8M), with a 17% share of global exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Turkey totaled +5.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-1.7% per year) and Austria (+92.7% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average quince export price stood at $855 per ton in 2022, waning by -6.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,076 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,289 per ton), while Serbia ($401 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
