View PricingPrice of Crude Oil in 2019
In 2019, the price of crude oil experienced significant fluctuations due to a combination of factors such as geopolitical tensions, global supply and demand, and economic growth concerns.
At the beginning of the year, the price of crude oil started at around $53 per barrel for Brent Crude, one of the major benchmarks for oil prices. This was relatively lower compared to the previous year, as concerns over a potential slowdown in the global economy and uncertainties surrounding trade tensions between the United States and China weighed on market sentiment.
In April, the price of oil reached its highest level for the year, with Brent Crude trading above $74 per barrel. This was primarily driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran. The tightening of U.S. sanctions on Iran and the uncertainty surrounding potential disruptions to oil supplies from the region led to a surge in prices.
However, as the year progressed, concerns about global economic growth and trade tensions resurfaced, leading to a decline in oil prices. By August, the price of Brent Crude had fallen to around $58 per barrel. The ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China, coupled with weaker economic data from major economies, dampened demand expectations and contributed to the downward pressure on oil prices.
In September, the price of crude oil experienced a significant spike following the attack on Saudi Arabia's oil facilities. The attack disrupted around 5% of global oil supply, leading to a surge in oil prices. Brent Crude reached a high of over $69 per barrel in the aftermath of the attack.
However, towards the end of the year, oil prices faced renewed downward pressure due to concerns about a global economic slowdown and rising inventories. By December, Brent Crude was trading at around $67 per barrel.
In summary, the price of crude oil in 2019 was volatile, influenced by geopolitical tensions, global economic growth concerns, and fluctuations in oil supply and demand. The highest price was observed in April due to tensions in the Middle East, while the lowest price was recorded in August amid trade tensions and economic uncertainty. Overall, the average price of oil for the year remained relatively moderate, hovering around $64 per barrel for Brent Crude.
