Price for Zirconium Ore and Concentrate in Australia (FOB) - 2023

The average zirconium ore and concentrate export price stood at $2,039 per ton in August 2023, dropping by -6.2% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 16% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $2,288 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($2,328 per ton) and South Korea ($2,255 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($1,964 per ton) and India ($2,017 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average zirconium ore and concentrate import price amounted to $2,207 per ton, growing by 43% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The import price peaked at $2,787 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($3,052 per ton), while the price for South Africa ($1,860 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+13.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Exports of Zirconium Ore and Concentrate in Australia

In 2022, shipments abroad of zirconium ores and concentrates decreased by -40.2% to 48K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year.

In value terms, zirconium ore and concentrate exports declined notably to $95M in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $119M, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
