Price for Wood Chips and Particles in the UK (CIF) - 2023
The average wood chips and particles import price stood at $60.1 per cubic meter in June 2023, dropping by -3.6% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a moderate increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, wood chips and particles import price increased by +62.7% against March 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 52% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $91.5 per cubic meter in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to June 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($198 per cubic meter), while the price for Ireland ($15.7 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average wood chips and particles export price amounted to $42 per cubic meter, picking up by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood chips and particles export price decreased by -31.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $62 per cubic meter in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($129 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Norway ($13 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Wood Chips and Particles in the UK
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of wood chips and particles, when their volume decreased by -55.7% to 245K cubic meters. Overall, imports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 553K cubic meters in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports shrank notably to $13M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -33.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 64%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $19M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
