In 2022, the average import price for white sugar (containing >= 99,5% sucrose) and chemically pure sucrose amounted to $565 per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $604 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Thailand ($777 per ton) and Ukraine ($617 per ton), while the price for India ($552 per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($607 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average export price for white sugar (containing >= 99,5% sucrose) and chemically pure sucrose stood at $2,096 per ton in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 94%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,107 per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($5,862 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($1,519 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+17.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of white sugar (containing >= 99,5% sucrose) and chemically pure sucrose decreased by -6.9% to 436K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 579K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of white sugar (containing >= 99,5% sucrose) and chemically pure sucrose skyrocketed to $246M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
