The average import price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses stood at $309 per ton in October 2023, dropping by -17.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 6.3% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $455 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Norway ($731 per ton), while the price for Switzerland ($153 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses stood at $365 per ton in October 2023, declining by -19.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $542 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($534 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($239 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth year in a row, the Netherlands recorded growth in overseas purchases of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses, which increased by 8.5% to 833K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, imports of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses surged to $421M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +15.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +53.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 50%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 623K tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, exports of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses surged to $347M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
