In June 2023, the average import price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses amounted to $322 per ton, rising by 6.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 22% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $386 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($389 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($234 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+20.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses amounted to $1,066 per ton, increasing by 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses increased by +83.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,956 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($674 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fourth year in a row, Pakistan recorded growth in overseas purchases of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses, which increased by 3.1% to 72K tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +19.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +69.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses dropped to $27M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +38.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $27M, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

For the third year in a row, Pakistan recorded decline in overseas shipments of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses, which decreased by -4.1% to 4K tons in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The smallest decline of -3.5% was in 2021.

In value terms, exports of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses reduced slightly to $4.3M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 18%.
