Price for Vegetables; Seed Potatoes, Fresh or Chilled in South Africa (FOB) - 2024

The average export price for vegetables; seed potatoes, fresh or chilleds stood at $587 per ton in July 2023, surging by 4.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a strong expansion from January 2023 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +7.6% over the last six-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, export price for vegetables; seed potatoes, fresh or chilleds decreased by -4.8% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 36% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $617 per ton. From May 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($601 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($186 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for vegetables; seed potatoes, fresh or chilleds amounted to $513 per ton, falling by -25.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a dramatic decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 1,203% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $20,834 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($552 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands amounted to $529 per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.5%).

For the fourth year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of vegetables; seed potatoes, fresh or chilleds, which increased by 22% to 24K tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of vegetables; seed potatoes, fresh or chilleds soared to $16M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
