In 2022, the average import price for tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped amounted to $4,512 per ton, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 8.7%. The import price peaked at $6,143 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($11,165 per ton), while the price for China ($2,175 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $9,572 per ton. From October 2023 to November 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Lesotho ($18,287 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($7,637 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+18.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped imported into South Africa fell to 7.8K tons, declining by -6.2% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year.

In value terms, imports of tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped dropped to $35M in 2022. Overall, imports faced a sharp contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 0.7%.
