The average export price for tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped stood at $5,338 per ton in 2022, rising by 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The export price peaked at $6,896 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($6,130 per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($3,829 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $5,704 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($5,606 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($2,876 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped increased by 31% to 412K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped soared to $2.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
