Price for Steel and Iron Articles in Switzerland (CIF) - 2023
The average steel and iron articles import price stood at $10,105 per ton in August 2023, which is down by -8.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 9.7% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $11,023 per ton. From July 2023 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($28,096 per ton), while the price for China ($6,921 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average steel and iron articles export price stood at $20,027 per ton in August 2023, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 13% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in August 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($45,870 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($8,313 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Steel and Iron Articles in Switzerland
In 2022, purchases abroad of articles of iron or steel decreased by -1.6% to 80K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 75%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 82K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, steel and iron articles imports reached $780M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
