In 2022, the average steel, alloy; semi-finished products import price amounted to $4,578 per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $5,601 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($15,154 per ton), while the price for Italy ($1,519 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+32.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $6,022 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($23,132 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($1,871 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+40.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of steel, alloy; semi-finished productses decreased by -12.8% to 392 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, steel, alloy; semi-finished products imports dropped modestly to $1.8M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $2M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
