Price for Steel, Alloy; Semi-Finished Products in Canada (CIF) - 2022

The average steel, alloy; semi-finished products import price stood at $752 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -12.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average import price increased by 53%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,103 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,297 per ton), while the price for Romania ($217 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+14.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price peaked at $1,160 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to -1.7% per month.

Imports of Steel, Alloy; Semi-Finished Products in Canada

In 2022, steel, alloy; semi-finished products imports into Canada shrank dramatically to 168K tons, which is down by -32.6% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 244%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 249K tons, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, steel, alloy; semi-finished products imports declined dramatically to $126M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 363% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $215M, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
