Price for Steel, Alloy; Ingots and Other Primary Forms in the United States (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average export price for steel, alloy; ingots and other primary formses amounted to $3,516 per ton, growing by 34% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 88% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($7,534 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($1,930 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $26,447 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($37,819 per ton), while the price for Canada amounted to $3,160 per ton.

From December 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+16.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
