Price for Steel, Alloy; Ingots and Other Primary Forms in Germany (CIF) - 2023

The average import price for steel, alloy; ingots and other primary formses stood at $1,628 per ton in August 2023, picking up by 26% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 42% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,124 per ton. From May 2023 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,048 per ton), while the price for China amounted to $2,018 per ton.

From December 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In August 2023, the average export price for steel, alloy; ingots and other primary formses amounted to $2,124 per ton, surging by 33% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 35% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,839 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the UK ($6,978 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($702 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+26.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Steel, Alloy; Ingots and Other Primary Forms in Germany

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of steel, alloy; ingots and other primary formses decreased by -19.5% to 73K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 42%.

In value terms, imports of steel, alloy; ingots and other primary formses reduced to $106M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +66.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $107M, and then reduced in the following year.
