In January 2024, the average import price for steel, alloy amounted to $3,890 per ton, surging by 14% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 an increase of 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $5,149 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($5,105 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($1,567 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for steel, alloy stood at $3,929 per ton in January 2024, jumping by 21% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $5,277 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to January 2024, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($5,307 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($1,773 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of steel, alloy, when their volume decreased by -5.1% to 12K tons. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year.

In value terms, imports of steel, alloy soared to $42M in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 123%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
